We have five new Havanese puppies in our home thanks to our Silver Havanese bitch “Lady”. Our daughter woke up in the middle of the night when we were whelping, so she got to be a part of the experience. This is her reaction to holding them shortly after they were born.

He’s really smart, even as young as he is. He catches on quick. Lady has been a little resistant to accept him into the pack, but she is starting to seek him out now for playtime. Our children LOVE him.
First of all, if you ever watched “101 Dalmations” when you were a kid, you probably remember the helpful English Sheepdog (ES). Well to be honest I find the Havanese breed, even Havanese Puppies, look a lot like the ES, only smaller.
1. Havanese Puppies/Havanese Dogs are extremely cute
2. Havanese are sturdy little dogs
3. The Havanese breed is not prone to illness
4. They are generally great with children
5. Havanese Puppies/Dogs are hypo-allergenic.
6. They are intelligent
The Havanese breed was perfect for us with our 3 children all 5 & under at the time we acquired our Havanese.
if you have any questions we would be happy to answer them. info[AT]championhavanesepuppies.com
We are the Luce Family. A special needs family. We have found our Havanese dog “Lady” a great addition to our family. It is our hope we can help other families, (whether they are special needs or not) find a dog for their family that integrates well with small children. Please look around and let us know if we can help. For us the Havanese was as close to as perfect dog as you can get.
Thanks,
The Luce Family
Lady is our now 2 YO Havanese female. This is our daughter.

I do attribute some of her excellent behavior to the pack hierarchy we have established in our house. Example when our daugher was 1.5, one day she pulled lady’s hair for sport, and lady growled at her, I instantly scolded Lady, and put lady on her back, pinning her to the couch with enough pressure to hold her in place, but not enough pressure to hurt her.
Since that moment she has never done anything like that. (it goes without saying I also explained to our daughter that was not nice and she should give Lady a hug to appologize). I am quite comfortable sharing our experiences with our Havanese puppy/dog in the hopes that it may help other families with special needs children in them.
It takes a special family to properly care for a child with special needs, and likewise it takes a special dog. Lady has been perfect for our oldest child (7 YO with Cerebral Palsy) She often uses the couch as a platform to climb onto his wheelchair. She does treat him differently than our other children, so that demonstrates she is aware he is unique.
First of all I have to give credit to my wife, Angela, for doing such excellent research on which breed would suit our family.
Here were the criteria that ultimately led us to select the Havanese breed over the 150+ breeds recognized by the AKC.
1. must have a great disposition (e.g. with children)
2. must not shed
3. must be hypoallergenic
4. must be intelligent
5. must be healthy
6. must be sturdy
We are a family of 5. My wife, Myself, our children: Ethan, our oldest is 8 years old, and has Cerebral Palsy. Eleanor, our energetic pre-schooler, and Judah our explorative toddler.
One of our primary concerns is that we wanted a dog that would not be prone to be snappy, or moody. (I grew up with German Shepherds– another great breed– but our Cocker Spaniel the dog we had prior to our Havanese was very moody, and not great with kids.)
We needed a dog that would relate to Ethan on his level, and be tolerant if Ethan pulled her hair while interacting with her.
We have not been disappointed by our selection of the havanese. On several occasions I have fond Ethan with his hands entwined in Lady’s hair, and she is just sitting there waiting for it to be over. Not once has she ever snapped, or growled at Ethan. In fact she has only yelped once that I recall. To be honest I wished she would yelp more often because I personally know how bad it can hurt when Ethan snags your hair. Yet she has only affection for Ethan. Many times in a week she will crawl up into his stroller (wheelchair), or bed, and she often curls up with him in bed or sits on his lap.
It is for this reason we have decided to recommend the Havanese breed forchildren with special needs. Please buy from a breeder with integrity. We will have a limited number of litters starting in fall 2009. Our lady comes from a champion bloodline, and it is our hope that she will help bring the joy of puppies to families of children with special needs.
CAVEAT: If you have an older child that has anger tendencies, or might be prone to willfully inflict pain on a pet, then this may not be the best choice, as it may result in injury to the dog. Dogs are emotional beings, and all Havanese may not be as tolerant as our Lady is of Ethan. Informal Notes on the Pack Hierarchy of our family.
